Are You Prepared if Disaster Hits?

September is National Preparedness Month. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has tips and information available so that you are prepared and ready should a disaster hit. Their suggestions are not only helpful in case of a natural disaster such as tornado, earth quake, flood or outage, but also helpful in reminding us to be prepared for any type of emergency that could occur. Though we all have the ability to phone 911 in an emergency, there are things we should have on hand, and planned out, should our calls for help be unavailable or delayed when needed the most.

  • Emergency Supply Kit: You should always have an emergency supply kit stocked and available. The supply kit should include enough supplies for your entire family. Water, nonperishable food, first aid, flashlights and a battery operated radio are some of the items that should be included in your kit.
  • Have a Plan: Much like a fire safety plan that you create and inform your family of in case of a fire, you should also have a plan in the event of any emergency. Make sure your family members are aware of what to do, and where to go, if a disaster should hit.
